Shamsul Ulama (1914-1996)
The Samastha and its renowned secretary Marhoom E.K Aboobacker Musliyar was a great thinker, philosopher and a versatile genius. He was well versed in Malayalam, Arabic, Urdu, and English. He was an able orator, one blessed with the gift of the gab and a very good organizer. The Muslim ummah in India is literally bereaved by the sad demise of this saintly servant.
He often advised the community about the need of acquiring both mundane and spiritual education. He admonished the community to follow the footprints of Khaja Mueenudheen chisthi, sheikh shahul Hameed Meeran Musliyar Nahoori, Shaikh Alaudheenul Himsi, Sayyid Alavi al Mamburami, Sainudheenul Kabeer Ma’bari and similar sufi saints who followed the religious orders of Shaikh Jeelani and Refaee and such others.
Shamsul ulama visualized a community which is ready to trace the path of the aforesaid elite of the community. He was of opinion that the future of Islam will remain extract only if the Muslims strictly adhere to the glorious lights enkindled by those religious luminaries.
We intent to pay homage to the late Shaikuna and cherish his holy memory by promoting these institution in this educationally backward area.
We are proud to present here a brief account of the great Maulana’s biography. It requires volumes to describe him. Shaikuna was born in parambil Kadav near Kozhikkode in the Hijra year 1333. It is in A.D 1914. He belongs to the Ezhuthachan kandi family. His father was E.K Koyakkutty Musliyar a famous religious scholar and mothers the devout BeeFathima. The founder president of Samastha was syed Abdul Rahiman Ba Alave Varakkal Mulla koya Thangal. His great ancestor Al Katheeb sayyid Muhammad Hamid Ba Alavi Thangal came to Calicut from Hazar mouth to progress Islam in Kerala.
One of the predecessors of E.K by name Muhammad was blessed to serve this holy man. He stayed with sayyid Hamid at Puthiyangadi. Varakkal Thangal was the great grandson of Sayyid Hamid, fifth bibe in the pedigree, sayyid Hamid was a Shaikh who followed the Qadiriyya order, varakkal Mullakkoya thangal also adhered to Qadiriyya Order. He became the founder president of Samastha in 1925 and E.K became its Secretery in 1957 and held the position prestigiously till his demise and served the Islamic community in Kerala and the adjacent states befitting to a great saint. He studied under the world famous Scholars and taught in the renounced institutions like Bakiyath Vellore, Jamiya Nooriya Pattikkad, Nandi Darussalam. He has contributed to Kerala and the Indian nation hundreds of Faizees and Darimies. He protected the Ahlu Sunna from the religion reformers through his scholarly syllogism, witly retorts and reporters. He passed in the mont of Rabeeul Akhir in 1996. He is laid to rest in the Varakkal Maqqam. To sum up the great sarvant’s story we have to quote Shakespeare, “Nature might stand up and say to all the world, this was a Man.”
